The Panjwaii

The Panjwaii. If you served in the Canadian military in the first decade of this century this word will evoke a variety of emotions. It will transport you back to a time and place of great struggle. Of beauty, simplicity, and tragedy.

This place is where the majority of Canadian soldiers fought and where too many lost their lives. We fought in those grape fields, on those razor-edge mountains, in those mud-walled villages, along those narrow paths and wadis.

We watched the fields. We watched the locals. We watched where we stepped.

This hat is to honour all those brave Canadians and those brave Afghanis who fought to make that dusty corner of the world safer. 158 returned in caskets. None returned unchanged.

Set in the hat is a piece of a battle-worn uniform of a Canadian PPCLI Afghanistan Veteran. Within those fibers is the fine dust of Panjwaii, the sweat of that fight, and the spirit of our endeavors.

We will be donating a portion of proceeds from this hat to Wounded Warriors Canada, a charity born in 2007 out of a need to better support Canadian Afghan Vets that continues to honour and support Canada’s ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, First Responders, and their families. - 'Maj'
